Dr Mathew Upton from Plymouth University will give an illustrated talk on Antarctica, with a description of a research visit. In January 1997, he travelled by boat from Uruguay to the British Antarctic Survey Halley
Base on the Brunt Ice Shelf in the Weddell Sea. The reason for his visit was to set up a research lab to detect human contamination in the pristine environment surrounding the base. He will touch briefly on the
science side of the trip, but mostly he will talk about the sights and animals seen on the journey to the base and back to Falkland Islands.
