Dartington Playgoers present ‘Inventing Utopia’ at 7.30pm each evening plus a 2pm matinee on the Saturday in Studio 31, Aller Park, Dartington. Inventing Utopia’ tells the story of Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst and the founding of the Dartington Estate in 1925. It draws on and is inspired by the social and artistic aims of the Elmhirsts and explores the beginnings of their visionary work at Dartington Hall. It reflects the upset, at times outrage, of local people, the change in farming methods and how children were encouraged to develop their artistic talents. It places that Utopian vision in a contemporary context - how the Dartington Hall of today discovers itself in its past and how its past must inform its future. The play has a company of 36 actors, a 4 piece band, choreographers, technicians and stagehands whose artistic and structural challenge is to tell a story set both in the past and today. Written for Dartington Playgoers by Nick Stimson, it is directed by Richard Clark, the successful team behind Playgoers last newly commissioned community play 'Love and Fire' which played to virtually full houses.
