The Hillyfield is a 45 acre woodland farm and ancient woodland regeneration project in a secluded valley in Harbourneford within Dartmoor National Park and walking distance from South Brent. It is managed for environmental and community benefit, although it is being forced to fell 1000 trees due to the disease Phytophthora Ramorum.
However, Hillyfield is now under threat after National Park planners, despite expert support from the Forestry Commission and huge community backing, served enforcement notices for the removal of some the structures crucial to the scheme to look after the land and make a viable business from processing the wood felled due to disease. DNPA argues that these structures constitute a change of use from agricultural to recreational and are therefore not permitted. As it is being seen as a test case, it could potentially impact on the viability of other small woodland regeneration projects. This will be fought out at a public planning inquiry in the autumn and Hillyfield needs to raise around £35,000 to cover legal fees. So far they have raised over £33,500 (95%) from hundreds of supporters. The story has made it to the National Press with an article in the Guardian, plus magazines and blogs.
