Suffragette (2015) ![]()
Set in 1922, the film is based on the working women who had seen peaceful protest to get votes for women achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in the fight for equality; their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Maud was on such foot soldier of the early feminist movement, forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller. It is also heart-breaking and inspirational.
Director: Sarah Gavron; Writer: Abi Morgan; Stars: Carey Mulligan, Ben Wishaw, Anne-Marie Duff, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep.
